A Resilient School - 1st Prize Contest

 

Invited to attend the Conference on “Design by Resilience” organized at the United Nations Secretariat Building in New York for receiving a special award for the "successful completion with Distinction of the course".

 

How can architecture help people in times of urgent need caused by natural disasters?

Online Course to Crowdsource Designs for Schools in Typhoon-struck Region in collaboration with the Department of Education of the Philippines and Architecture for Humanity to build the

best Design proposals.

 

 The contest proposed to design resilient schools that could serve as community centers and shelters for the victims of the devastating typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, on november 2013.

 

To interrupt the cycle of destruction-reconstruction-destruction the focus is placed on the research of innovative technologies for the building on exploring new approaches. The prototype, which consists of a framed structure in reinforced concrete, is able to resist earthquake and typhoons with continuous foundation. The walls are made out of layers of traditional and new techniques in construction. The roof consists of a structure of wooden beams and bamboo lattice roof and is designed to withstand the excessive strong winds resulting from typhoons and to keep it sturdy and strongly attached.

 

This kind of structure which represents a hybrid between a typical bamboo construction and a reinforced concrete and brick building, already exists in Filipino tradition and for this reason our project can be defined as a continuation of local expertise.

Accessibility, flexibility, cost effectiveness and sustainability were the other criteria of our design process, whose goal is to ‘build back better’.
